I can't tell you how much this class has enlightened me on how books were made and what little things can be looked at to figure out the character that each book contains. We were even able to experience the exact methods that people used before computers to make paper, carve images, and set type before printing and binding the books.
Unfortunately, I think that the age of books is declining a little bit in the face of new technology in the form of Nooks, Kindles, and other Ebooks. Even though these new forms of reading have drawn other people into reading the books that we all know and love, it seems like these same books are being pushed out as well. So I guess my question is: are books a dying breed? or will they always have some place in today's society? Personally, books will always have a special place in my heart, and be important to my sanity: a place that even my Kindle can't fill
I love holding books too! I actually can't really study that well from an online book source cause I always get distracted by other things like Facebook or Pintrest which are just a click away. I am a Bioenvironmental Science major though and from this viewpoint I actually would be happy to see electronic books become more popular in use. The amount of trees saved without the need of traditional paper books would be immense. Of course paper would still be needed for other uses, but the amount of trees saved would really help our environment. I say I like holding a traditional book in my hand, but this is a selfish thing to say when whole forests could be saved.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. Although somehow it seems like today's society is paradoxically pushing out books while at the same time welcoming them into their daily lives. If you look at our own Barns & noble's, they have a new line of books that are basically classics that have been gilded and bound in a pretty cover. This actually gives me hope that maybe paper books will have a place in this new emerging technological society.
